Facing an Energy Crisis, Zimbabwe Hangs Its Hopes on Solar
As an El Niño-induced drought cripples hydropower generation at Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe and its neighbours are facing an unprecedented energy crisis with daily power cuts of up to 18 hours. In this dire situation, the nation is making a strategic and urgent pivot to solar power as its most viable lifeline.

The Kariba Crisis: A Climate Catastrophe
Lake Kariba, the lifeblood of Zimbabwe's power grid, is facing a dire situation. Due to severe drought and increased evaporation, the lake's usable water for power generation has plummeted to just over 10%. Energy Minister Edgar Moyo confirmed that Zimbabwe's power station at Kariba, with a capacity of 1,050MW, is now only able to produce an average of 214MW.
This massive 800MW deficit has plunged the country into darkness, with daily power cuts extending up to 18 hours. The situation is mirrored in neighbouring Zambia, which shares the Kariba Dam. With rains still months away, there is a real fear that both hydro plants could be forced to shut down completely.
The Urgent Pivot to Solar
In response, Zimbabwe is aggressively pursuing solar energy. Key projects include a 1,000MW floating solar plant on Lake Kariba in partnership with China Energy Engineering Corporation, and another 500MW plant planned for Victoria Falls. Furthermore, around 27 small Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are set to develop nearly 1,000MW of solar capacity.
To accelerate this transition, the government has removed import duties on all solar products and accessories. This move is designed to encourage private investment and make solar energy more affordable for both businesses and households struggling with the power crisis.
Sona Solar Zimbabwe is at the forefront of the country's solar revolution, providing end-to-end solar solutions for homes, businesses, and small industries. They supply, install, and maintain high-quality systems, collaborating with global manufacturers to deliver reliable energy solutions.

Challenges & Opportunities
Despite a 90% drop in the cost of solar products over the last decade, the initial capital investment remains a significant hurdle for many. Investment banker and solar entrepreneur Nyasha Chasakara argues that African governments should offer more financial incentives, such as tax rebates, to unlock local funding and attract private capital.
As highlighted by Zambian energy expert Dr. Johnstone Chikwanda, solar power's intermittency means that energy storage (batteries) is crucial for a reliable 24/7 power supply. While this adds to the cost, it is also driving innovation and creating opportunities for a more resilient grid.
According to Victor Kashawu of Vicky Solars, negative perceptions of solar power are rapidly changing. As more Zimbabweans experience the reliability of professionally installed systems from reputable companies that offer warranties and backup service, solar is being recognized as the most dependable long-term solution.

Frequently Asked Questions
The power cuts are primarily due to a severe drought that has caused record-low water levels at Lake Kariba, drastically reducing the country's main source of hydroelectric power.
Zimbabwe is making a major shift to solar power. The government is backing large-scale projects, including a 1,000MW floating solar plant on Lake Kariba, and has removed import duties on solar products to encourage private investment.
While the initial investment can be high, the cost of solar products has fallen dramatically. The removal of import duties is expected to make it more affordable. Furthermore, the long-term savings on electricity bills and the cost of running generators make it a financially viable solution.
Yes. With abundant sunshine (over 3,000 hours annually), solar power is an extremely reliable energy source for Zimbabwe. When paired with modern battery storage, it can provide a consistent 24/7 power supply, making it the most dependable solution for the future.
